Named for the famous Japenese sword used by Samauri warriors, the Katana class cruiser was researched and designed to be a replacement to the older Broadsword class. Over 15 years in development and taking a year to build the first Katana was launched in 2741. Quickly earning a reputation as an extremley formidable vessel, it was a Katana class cruiser that single handedly ended the siege of the Beta Hydri system. Earning its name from the two Katana shaped hull sections, the vessel can use these blade like protrusions to ram enemy vessels, causing massive structural damage. The ship than can open up with a barrage from its forward mounted weapons to finish them off.
